Reading the article about Senna's first F1 car and a 2nd place wet finish at Monaco got me thinking. What drivers have scored the best finishes with inferrior machinery? Sebastian Vettel's win in a Toro Rosso comes to mind.

Schumi's Pole Lap in '96.
The Ferrari was a dog, and he dragged it around for this flyer of a lap.

Alonso for the entire first half of the 2013 season. I'm now fully aware of his driving skills. Gifted.

Damon Hill in the Hungarian Grand Prix 1997, drving a back-marker Arrow-Yamaha car he qualified 3rd, overtook Schumacher for the lead and would have won if not the failure of a washer. Still, 2nd was Yamaha's best ever finish and Arrows never won a race.

David Ragans win at Talledega last year
Trevor Baynes Daytona 500 win
Derrick Copes Daytona 500 win
Dale Earnhardts 1979 Rookie of the Year, followed by the 1980 Championship.
The first Southern 500 race at Darlington. Most of the field were dirt guys who were not used to the length. The guy who one just paced him self and came out on top.

It is so hard to believe a Ferrari can ever be considered a dog lol.

Robert Kubica's third place podium finish @ Monza/Italian GP in 2006, his rookie year and it was only his 3rd race - and it was half way through the season when he replaced Jacques Villeneuve

I'll give you Derrick Cope's win at the 500, but with pack racing it wouldn't surprise me if any one of the 43 cars win one of those stupid plate races. As far as Earnhardt in 79 and 80 I don't know enough about the equipment one way or the other.

What car was it and how did that car perform the rest of the year?

BMW Sauber, so not the best performing team on the field, though I don't really know how badly it performed during the rest of the season.

Team got 5th in the constructors table and Heidfeld finished 3rd 2 races before Monza in Hungary so I'm going to have to pass on that one.

Fisichella in the Jordan-Cosworth, Brazil 2003 - 2nd on the day, changed to 1st after a penalty, but given how bad the car was that year it was still a pretty good drive.

When a win is worth 10 points and your team scores just 3 points the entire rest of the season that definitely qualifies as getting the most out of crap equipment.

Agreed, it wasn't a front runner, but it wasn't an underperformer either.

How nobody said Giancarlo Fisichella at Spa 2009?
The car was the worst car from the grid since the team started, he got a pole and an 2nd place at the race.
And later without him, the car gone back to the last position...

Didn't they follow-up their performance at Spa with a good performance at Monza? The car was really good in lower levels of downforce.

It really was a bad car, Ross Brawn and Rory Bryne were just hired. The car was fast, but no where near as fast as the FW18, nor as reliable. That was Schumi on the limit.
